Acronis True Image Success Story — Forecast International

Overview

Forecast International, Inc. provides market intelligence and analyses for the aerospace, defense, military electronics, and power systems industries. Forecast International products are designed to assist corporate executives, military leaders and top government personnel in strategic planning and gathering market intelligence. A staff of seasoned professionals tracks over 5,000 individual programs and produces a series of market intelligence services, analyses, and specialized news services in support of a worldwide client base. Key areas of market research include military and civil aerospace, weapons and missile systems, electronics, naval systems, and power systems. All reports come complete with 10-year unit and value forecasts, as well as projected market share calculations for competing manufacturers.

In a Bind

Forecast International was introduced to Acronis True Image as a result of an existing emergency situation. The company had a number of production servers running various applications; SQL, web and email servers, file sharing, and anti-virus applications. One of the main production web servers was compromised and incredibly unstable. The IT staff managed to get the server up and running again, but were forbidden due to company policies to take the server offline for 1-2 days and rebuild it from scratch. The company was also reluctant to image this server because it was concerned that the instability would be contained in the image.

1-2 Days of Product Downtime Avoided and Crisis Resolved

Forecast International acted quickly. The company purchased the recognized backup and disaster recovery software Acronis True Image Server with a new cutting-edge feature Acronis Universal Restore on board, which are perfect at imaging and restoring servers (SQL, web or email ones). The products were installed and used on a rental server that replicated the unstable web server. The IT staff applied Acronis backup and restore technology and rebuilt the rental machine to duplicate all the capabilities of its production web server. Once the rental machine was a fully functional duplicate of how the company's own Web server was supposed to work, the IT staff used Acronis Universal Restore to image the rental server and restore that image to the unstable production machine. Although the two servers had dissimilar hardware, Acronis Universal Restore was able to load the image onto the production system. "We had a very limited time window for this project so we needed to find a product that allowed us to restore the entire server to different hardware quickly," said Mark Waldorf, director of MIS. "Acronis True Image Server and Acronis Universal Restore allowed us to do this." Once the image created from the rental machine was applied to the production machine, the instability issues were resolved and the server was up and running properly with no issues. The production server was repaired without ever taking the system out of service.
